Shadow working

Our Work portifolio

designs

Shadow work is an embroidery done on a lightweight, sheer or semi-sheer fabric such as voile, georgette, lawn, organdie, organza, muslin and batiste, to name a few. We do it on the reverse of the fabric and give a shadowy effect on the right side of the material.

Whilst any embroidery threads can be used to work the embroidery, we have used Anchor stranded cotton for our projects. We favor sharps, crewel, or between needles but as long as the needle has a sharp point and an eye large enough for the thread, it will be suitable for us to use.

Shadow Work Butterfly

The Shadow Work Butterfly is a surface embroidery technique made up of bands of herringbone stitch at the back of the fabric that show through at the front as a shadow of color and is a simple form of 2-sided embroidery.

Apple Blossoms

The Apple Blossoms are a 2-sided hand embroidery technique. The design is worked in surface embroidery stitches on a taffeta fabric using DMC No. 8 Perle cotton thread.

How we do it

Whilst any embroidery threads can be used to work the embroidery, we have used Anchor stranded cotton for our projects. We favor sharps, crewel, or between needles but as long as the needle has a sharp point and an eye large enough for the thread, it will be suitable for us to use.
