Fish Scale Embroidery

Our Work portifolio

designs

This is for some ingenious admirers where fish scales are utilized for decorative purposes. The scales of any fish can be utilized, though those of perch are preferred due to the variation of colours, but usually, a variety of scales are needed.

After being removed from the fish, we clean the scales, and while moist, two holes punched near the roots with a small awl or darning needle, or short incisions are made on the opposite sides for fastening them on the design, after which we place them between the folds paper to dry

Fish-scale reticule

The best scales were brilliant iridescent hues with deep serrations, such as in the perch and some varieties of carp. Other types of fish scales that were beautiful were also utilized, amongst them the luminously coloured scales of the common goldfish. The most brilliant colouring, or luminosity, was found in the female; the scales were more prominent too, which was an essential consideration in some flowers.

Marguerites

In making marguerites, or other flowers of star-like shape, the scales were first sewn around the outer edges of the tracing prepared on the material, repeating the circles in gradually diminishing sizes until the centre of the flower was reached. The centre was often finished with a cluster of French knots in suitably coloured silk, decorative glass, or metal beads. The leaves were formed by sewing the scales flatly upon each side of the midrib, which, like the stems and veins of leaves, were worked in stem or outline stitch with green silk

How we do it

We clean the scales, and while moist, two holes punched near the roots with a small awl or darning needle, or short incisions are made on the opposite sides for fastening them on the design, after which we place them between the folds paper to dry
